Mission

The Mission of the Sports Injury Clinic is to provide students with quality care in the prevention, recognition and treatment of injuries related to sport and recreation.

About Us

Athletic Therapy is the prevention, recognition, immediate care and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries especially as they relate to active individuals, especially in the active population. Athletic Therapists work in clinics and with teams providing on-site immediate care for teams and events. An Athletic Therapist assesses injuries and conditions, uses contemporary rehabilitative techniques, therapeutic modalities, soft tissue mobilization, physical reconditioning, and supportive strapping procedures to promote an environment conducive to optimal healing in preparing the individual for safe reintegration in to an active lifestyle at a recreational level or a return to elite athletics at the highest level. The Athletic Therapist, in cooperation with other members of the healthcare team, is an integral part of a total service to maximize the performance and welfare of the individual. Concomitant with the execution of this role, the Athletic Therapist nurtures an attitude of positive health.

To become certified, an Athletic Therapist must complete an internship of at least 1,200 hours of practical experience (this includes 600 hours of field experience at athletic events and 600 hours of injury rehabilitation in a clinical setting), under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Therapist before being allowed to attempt the Certification Exam administered by the Canadian Board of Certification for Athletic Therapy. They must pass a comprehensive theory exam, and a practical exam with a clinical and field component before they are allowed the designation of Certified Athletic Therapist - CAT(C).
