Colts Get Their First

Colts Get Their First

By: Pedro Casellatto

Scarborough, ON - It took a little longer than planned, but the first win came for the Centennial Women's Basketball team. With a rough start and dealing with many injuries in the team, the Colts seemed to be over it and had a great performance against the Loyalist Lancers in an electrifying match.

At the beginning of the first half, the game started a little slow, with both teams struggling to input their strategies into the game. With 13 turnovers, the game was quite scrambled. With around two minutes left in the first half, the Lancers slowly found a nice pace and took the lead. Although the Colts' defence played well, getting many rebounds, the first half ended with a four-point lead, with 19-14 on the scoreboard. In the second half, the Colts fought back and took the lead. Marian Martin was a key player for the Colts' offence, with three assists, leading the Colts to a win in the second half.

In the second half, the Colts started out with a five-point lead, but the Lancers did not back up and fought it back. At that point, Brooklynn White had 13 points and got the Lancers back in the game. In the last minute of the third quarter, the lead was bouncing back and forth, staying on the Colts' side for the end of the quarter. A big wave of momentum came for the Colts at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and they opened a 13-point lead. Playing against the clock, the Lancers stepped up. With an emotional ending, the Colts closed the game 70-67, making it their first win of the season. With 15 points and 10 assists, Mikaela Hawkins showed the fans a high level of basketball throughout the whole game.

After this result, the Colts will focus on their next opponent, the St. Lawrence Surge, this Sunday at home at 1:00 p.m. We hope that they can bring the same energy and climb their way up to the playoffs.
