Badminton: Colts Headed To OCAA Provincials

By Caio Miari

The Centennial Colts varsity badminton team is headed to the OCAA Badminton Provincial Championships, which will be hosted by Conestoga College from Feb. 13-14.

The Colts advanced to the Provincial Championships in three of the five badminton events after strong performances in the OCAA East Regional hosted by Georgian College in Barrie, Ont., this past weekend (Jan. 31-Feb.1)

In men’s singles, Parmveer Singh (India) will be competing for Centennial in the Provincials after clinching a bounceback win in the east regional. Singh, who had lost to Areej Shalwani (Pakistan) of George Brown in one of the semifinals, pulled out the final spot at Provincials with a comeback victory against Seneca's Justin Wong (Vancouver, B.C.) 20-22, 21-18, 21-12 in the third-place match. The first-year player holds a 3-3 record.

The Colts also advanced to the Provincials through a third-place match triumph in men’s doubles, as Peter Nie (Toronto, Ont.) and Hamza Munawar (Bowmanville, Ont.) put up strong teamwork to beat George Brown. Nie and Munawar qualified for provincials with a record of 3-2.

Finally, Jia Yi Feng (Scarborough, Ont.) and Brandon Cheung (Scarborough, Ont.) won silver in mixed doubles and booked their tickets to the Provincials. Feng, along with Dave Chirag in 2019, brought home the first national mixed doubles badminton medal in Centennial Colts history. The Colts' team finished the regional behind Seneca's Poy Lo (Markham, Ont.) and another former OCAA silver medalist Christine Nguyen (Whitby, Ont.), and ahead of Georgian's Daniel Hong (Angus, Ont.) and Gurkehar kaur Kalra (India).

Taylor Liou (Toronto, Ont.) and Leora Kotian (Markham, Ont.) ended up eliminated in women’s singles despite a great effort in their respective playoff round, while Edmond Lin (Toronto, Ont.) fell short in men’s singles.

In the team competition, Centennial finished the east regional second in the men’s title, behind only Seneca.

As several Colts kept alive their chances of writing part of the school's badminton history, here are Centennial’s last competitors to reach the national podium in each category:

  • Men’s singles: Alishan Shalwani (Bronze, 2017-18)
  • Women’s singles: Yan Zhou (Silver, 2013-14)
  • Men’s doubles: Simon Yip/Ben Wong (Silver, 2008-09)
  • Women’s doubles: Maria Fraser/Jenny Bird (Gold, 1986-87)
  • Mixed doubles: Dave Chirag/Jia Yi Feng (Silver, 2018-19)
