Colts Short-handed at George Brown Invitational

By: Jolyon Thompson

TORONTO, ONTARIO - Less than half of our Colts team entered, with one of their strongest players needing to withdraw before the tournament due to illness. The Colts Entered the George Brown Invitational with one Men's singles entry, one Wome's Singles entry, two Mixed doubles entries, and two Women's doubles entries.

In Men's singles, Rejin Arante made the semifinals of the Consolation draw losing narrowly in three games. In women's singles, Ivy Wong tried hard but came up short, losing to a University of Waterloo player in the main draw and then did not win in the consolation rounds. In Women's doubles, Ivy Wong and Faye Tenio, Deniese Scott and Mariel Vaillarit lost their matches in this Open Invitational tournament.

On Sunday of the Tournament, coach Liz Duong teamed up with the GBC women's coach to advance to the semifinals in Women's doubles, losing to the eventual tournament winners. In Mixed-Doubles, Liz teamed up with Rejin Arante, while Deniese Scott was paired with Roney Roy. Both Colts teams won their first matches but lost their second ones.

Unlike other OCAA tournaments, the George Brown Invitational allows university and club players to compete. This adds to the breadth of competition. However, with only four courts there are invariably delays in the staggered start times of events as well as late finishes.

The Colts will bounce back as they host the next OCAA Badminton invitational at the Athletic and Wellness Centre on January 13 and 14.
