Indoor Season Review

By: Anthony Santia

This year, the Centennial Colts Indoor Men's Soccer team had a tough run in the indoor Soccer championship. They qualified after going 2-2 in qualifiers back on Monday, February 26. This record was good enough to clinch a wild-card spot in the OCAA provincial championship.

The Colts were put in a group with Fanshawe, Conestoga and Seneca. Centennial played their three games on Thursday, March 7, with hopes to advance to the knockout rounds, which were played the following day, Friday, March 8.

Centennial's first group game was against Fanshawe, who came into the day as two-time running champions. This game didn't go to plan for the Colts, as they conceded 4 goals. The final score was 4-0 for Fanshawe.

The second group game for Centennial was against Conestoga who finished last season as bronze medalists. On paper, this was the Colts best game of the day, as they scored first and held Conestoga out very well. Conestoga tied it mid-way through the second half and was awarded a penalty kick with just one second left on the clock due to an illegal slide. This led to the game-winning goal, and Conestoga won this game 2-1. This score mathematically eliminated Centennial from contention of moving through to the knockouts.

The Colts third and final game was against Seneca, who lost in last year's finals. They showed why they made the finals last year, as they got 2 goals in the first half. Once Centennial went down two to nothing they pressed to try and score but fell just short on scoring. The final score was 2-0 Seneca.

Centennial finished 0-3 on the day. Humber won the championship after beating Conestoga 3-1 in the finals.

Coach David Lattavo said the following about the Men's indoor season: "We are very happy with how the indoor season finished. We had to make some adjustments to the squad, and we brought on some new players that brought the level of intensity up. These new players were influential both on and off the field. The preparation for our regional qualifiers got the team ready and we were able to qualify for our provincial tournament. Unfortunately, it didn't go our way, but It's a step in the right direction for a new squad and a young program. It shows that our team can compete with top teams in the province, and that they deserve to be there. Overall, the indoor season was a significant improvement from the fall."
