It was a rough winter home opener Friday night at the Athletic and Wellness Centre for the Centennial Colts women's basketball team as they lost by double digits to St Lawrence (Kingston)

Although the Colts women fought valiantly for most of the first half against the Vikings, the St. Lawrence offense was too much to overcome for Centennial as they fell 75-45.

The loss extends the Colts' losing streak to three and they are now 5-6 on the season. For the Vikings, they remain unbeaten and are 11-0.

Rookie Yasmeen Smith had a double-double with 11 points, which led the team, and ten rebounds along with a team-leading two steals while veteran Kayla Higgins led the Colts with 11 rebounds and five assists.

For St. Lawrence, Brooke Kelly hit four three pointers and led the team with 15 points in the win.

Although Centennial outrebounded St. Lawrence on the glass (56-43) and had more bench points (33-24), it was the turnovers that killed the Colts. The Centennial women committed 35 turnovers compared to the Vikings' 19. They were also beat from the three point line (ten to four), in assists (21-7) and shot just 24.6 per cent (17-69) from the field.

Centennial fought tooth and nail with St. Lawrence as they trailed by just four (24-20) midway through the second quarter. However, the Vikings closed the half on a 17-6 run and the Colts could not catch up from there.

The Colts have a week off to figure things out before they head out on the road and hope to get back into the win column against the Georgian Grizzlies on Jan. 28 at 1:00 pm.
