SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO – The Centennial Colts captured their first win of 2023, thrashing the Georgian Grizzlies 60-35 and sweeping the season series. Colts forward Mikaela Hawkins' presence was felt offensively and defensively, dropping 14 points, along with nine steals and six rebounds.

A turnover-filled first quarter saw the Colts only put up 12 points. They would turn things around in the second, as they converted on quality looks. Hawkins left the game in the second quarter with a leg injury, but head coach Naomi Mullings picked up her star player and brought her to the bench. With just over two minutes remaining in the quarter Hawkins returned and made a jump shot from the elbow showing strength and perseverance to continue playing.

The Colts (3-6) headed into halftime with a 27-23 lead and would not look back. Shakiya Stephens gave the Colts their first double-digit lead at the 4:57 mark in the third quarter.

The Colts displayed a defensive masterclass, the only field goal they allowed in the quarter was with 17 seconds left by Grizzlies guard Lily Roberts-Neef.

Colts forward Tara Dowrich produced a double-double adding 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Hawkins ended the game, by making three fast-break layups which put the nail in the coffin.

The Grizzlies (2-6) were without their leading scorer Kyanna Thompson, who is second in the OCAA in that category averaging 20.2 ppg. Guard Kory Hook had a team-high 14 points but did most of her damage in the first half.

The Lady Colts' next game is January 28 against the Algonquin Wolves at 4 pm.
