SCARBOROUGH, ONT.- The Centennial Colts women's soccer team were looking to build on their momentum from Tuesday night's draw against the Loyalist Lancers on Friday evening at Progress Turf Field. But they would face a stern challenge in the Algonquin Thunder.

And although the Colts (0-4-1) fell 1-0 to the Thunder (3-0-2), it was their closest goal margin against Algonquin in five years. The last time Centennial defeated Algonquin was a 2-1 win in the OCAA Championship bronze medal game in penalty kicks on Oct. 27, 2012.

Thunder forward Andrianna Dmulchalsky scored the only goal of the game. Centennial's Sabrina Rizzo stopped 16 out of 17 shots while Algonquin's Kirsten Skinner made 11 saves for her fourth clean sheet of the season.

The first half saw both teams lock down on the defensive end as neither team could generate many scoring opportunities. Centennial went into intermission encouraged, as the game remained scoreless.

It didn't come without a cost, however, as midfielder Jessica Friend and forward Sayla Peters each left the game with injuries and did not return.

Algonquin finally broke through in the 53rd minute after Dmulchalsky fired a low right foot strike to the left corner past Rizzo.

However, Rizzo kept the margin at one with a spectacular sequence in which she made four saves in the 68th minute and in the 89th minute, punching a high strike over the net. Colts midfielder Kayla Lui had the best chance for the home side in the 62nd minute but her attempt went high as Algonquin held on for the victory.

The last two performances from Centennial are a sign that the victory that has eluded them so far this season will come very soon.
