Clay played his college volleyball at Fleming College where he captained the Knights for 4 seasons while graduating with honors in Recreation and Leisure Services. During his time in the OCAA he was a 3X All-Star, broke the OCAA single season and all-time blocking records, Fleming College athlete of the year, team MVP, and many other accolades. After using all his collegiate eligibility, he decided to give back to the program that shaped him, becoming Fleming's assistant coach for 2 years.

But he wasn’t ready to stop playing. After one season with Magnes Spartans of the Canadian Volleyball League (ONE Volleyball) a German club signed Clay to his first professional contract, where he won the Bundesliga championship. Since then, he has played in Denmark, Luxembourg, Mongolia, and Greece. During his summers, Clay comes home to coach youth beach volleyball in Peterborough with Andrew Hinchey for the past decade and is now ready to continue the spread of this beautiful game.
