SCARBOROUGH — The Centennial Colts (4-4) held the undefeated St. Clair Saints (9-0) to four runs, scoring two themselves in the loss.
St. Clair has dominated the league, winning the last three OCAA championships, and earned 80 runs in their first eight games this season. The Colts provided tough competition to the league leaders, scoring two runs against a team that had only conceded eight this season.
Yui Kusano was key to the Colts' success, pitching a complete game for the home team and recording four strikeouts. His poise on the mound kept Centennial out of trouble as he forced the Saints to leave runners in scoring positions in multiple innings.
The Colts played one of their best defensive games this season, making no errors throughout the seven innings.
Josh Anderson opened the scoring for the Saints in the top of the first after they loaded the bases, and Henry Real drove him home.
Veteran Colt, Liam Oates, responded with a double in the bottom of that inning. An error from St. Clair brought him to third after Kevin Akiyama's at-bat, and with the bases loaded, a Shoya Hase walk sent him home.
Tied 1-1 through the second, the Saints made their move in the third, with Adrian Harrison and Kanaan Gale collecting runs, putting the visitors up 3-1.
In the fourth, St. Clair extended their lead with a run from Colin Robinson, their last run of the game.
Three quick innings followed with neither team earning a run.
Then, in the seventh, the Colts turned up the heat, looking for a walk-off.
Owen Nichols got on base with a walk, and a promising double from Oates sent him home. But one more run would be as close as the Colts could get, dropping the contest 4-2.
The teams rematched for their second of the doubleheader at 3 p.m.
