Colts' Late Rally Falls Short in 9-5 Loss to St. Clair

SCARBOROUGH — Centennial drops second game against St. Clair 9-5 on Saturday. What looked promising for the Colts through the first four innings fell apart in the fifth and continued to deteriorate. After tying the Saints 1-1 in the bottom of the second, the Colts seemed poised to hold their own for the remainder of the game, but St. Clair had other plans.

Centennial's defence struggled in the fifth. Andy Rogers threw two wild pitches in a row, which St. Clair capitalized on, stealing home both times. Kevin Akiyama came in halfway through the inning but still couldn't stop the Saints' momentum, as they went on to score three more runs that inning, making it 6-1 for St. Clair. The visitors extended their lead again in the sixth with a three-run bomb from Panamanian catcher Henry Real, putting them up 9-1.

By the bottom of the seventh, things looked bleak for the Colts, who hadn't added to their score since the second inning. Looking to close the game, St. Clair brought in Gerardo Abrego as their reliever. Abrego struggled on the mound, however, walking the first three batters he faced and giving up four stolen bases on wild pitches. The Colts took advantage of these struggles, scoring four runs in the final inning.

Ryan Stec, Mitchell Pattison, Liam Oates, and Cameron James scored after being walked in their at-bats.

Despite their efforts in the final inning, the Colts lost the game 9-5.

They play next on Sept. 26 in Durham for a doubleheader.
