Lady Colts’ basketball fall short against George Brown in Home Opener

By Caio Miari and Marcus Rebelo

Beyonce Hosang's double-double wasn't enough to save the Centennial Colts women's basketball team from a 81-75 loss to the George Brown Huskies Friday night at Progress Campus.

Hosang, a first-year power forward, scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds coming off the bench for the Colts (0-1). Led by the Brampton, Ont. native, Centennial's bench outscored George Brown's 22-9.

"Beyonce works really hard, and she did a great job scoring," said head coach Justin Bobb, in his post-game availability. "But I want to commend her for her job on the glass tonight. She did a great job boxing out and rebounding the ball for us. When she does that it frees up our shooting."

Janai Menzes led the Colts offensively with 17 points, while Cori Browne scored 16, including 12 from her perfect three-point line performance (4-for-4).

Judy Ta also stood out from downtown for Centennial (3-of-8), finishing the night with 11 points, while adding five rebounds and four assists.

"Excellent performance, we executed well on defence," said Bobb, when asked how he assessed his team's performance. "Really made them (George Brown) work for their shots tonight, there seems to have been a lid on the hoop tonight. If we can convert more on our field goals we're in good shape."

The Colts shot 28.9% (26-of-90) from the field, while the Huskies were 29.5% (26-of-88) in their field goal attempts.

George Brown's starting five impact was the difference-maker on the court, as they had three 15-plus point performers.

Victoria Lawrence with a game-high 21 points, Ciara Findlayter-Stephenson with 19, and Zae Seller with 15, all played a factor in the contest.

"We prepared for what they do," Bobb said. "We know how tough of a team they were and tried to handle that. First quarter we didn't do a great job on that but we improved a lot after that."

Centennial was outmatched 22-15 in the first quarter, a seven-point deficit that set the tone for the remainder of the action as the Colts never obtained the lead.

"We have an incredible home crowd that we appreciate a lot and we're going to continue to work hard and we're getting a lot better," he added.

The Colts' next challenge will take place Friday, October 25, this time on the road against the St. Lawrence Vikings.
