Colts Lose in Season Opener

Scarborough, ON - Ami May of the Georgian Grizzlies led the charge with 27 points in a commanding 91-52 victory over the Centennial Colts in OCAA women's basketball action Friday night. Along with her game-high 27, May filled the stat sheet in her first collegiate game with seven rebounds and eight assists.

Emma Vale and Janella Viado each scored 14 for the Grizzlies (1-0) in the victory. Kyanna Thompson also added 11 points of her own with four rebounds and two blocks.

For the Colts (0-1), Jessica Jones led the team with 13 points in her OCAA debut, Jones also pulled down six rebounds. Mikaela Hawkins was the only other Centennial player to score in double figures with 11, but was able to create turnovers with three steals.

The game leaned in Georgian's direction the entire way. The Grizzlies opened the game with an aggressive full court trap that forced the Colts into six turnovers in the opening quarter. May and Coompany took full advantage of the extra opportunities, shooting 53% and leading 27-9 after the first quarter.

The Grizzlies moved the ball with ease in the second quarter, assisting on all nine of their field goals to close the first half with a 25-point lead.

Georgian built upon their lead in the second half and never let the Colts get back into the game. The Grizzlies had an unbelievable team performance finishing with 27 assists on 37 field goals.

A disappointing start to a new season for Centennial, the Colts are trying to bounce back after a 4-10 record last season. Only managing to shoot 33% from the field as a team, Centennial will have a chance to get the offence rolling Friday evening when they take on the Algonquin Wolves.
