SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO - The Centennial Women's Soccer team secured their second win of the season last Sunday, defeating the Loyalist Lancers 5-0 and ending the weekend on top of the standings.

The Colts delivered a commanding performance, adding another dominant win to their 2024 record. However, while their 5-0 victory showcased their strength, it wasn't quite as overwhelming as last season's 13-0 triumph over the Lancers.

The windy conditions at the Colts' Pitch played a significant role in the game. The gusty winds affected the ball's trajectory, making aerial passes and through balls more difficult to execute precisely. The Colts, known for their speed on the outside and ability to play the ball in the air, had to adjust their strategy. The wind either sent the ball too far or held it up in the air, resulting in more 50-50 balls rather than clean, open passes.

The Lancers came prepared with a defensive strategy, aiming to stifle the Colts' attacking prowess by parking the bus. Though the Colts' speedy wingers, instrumental in their previous victory, struggled to break through initially, a pivotal moment came when Nailah Rowe converted a perfect long-through pass from Alyssia Devellis to put Centennial up 1-0.

While Loyalist's defence held firm for much of the first half, they remained committed to their defensive stance until halftime.

The second half saw a shift in momentum. Elizabeth Maione dazzled with a brilliant solo effort, scoring a second goal and giving the Colts added breathing room. As the Lancers were forced to chase the game, they left gaps in their defence, which the Colts exploited with three more goals. Notably, Dalyla Horn scored her first-ever OCAA goal in her debut, completing the 5-0 victory.

Looking ahead, Coach Ritch and the team will prepare for their first away game. The Colts travel to Peterborough to face the Fleming Phoenix this Wednesday (Sept. 11) at 6:00 p.m.
