After two hours of intense game time and seven nerve-wracking penalty kicks for each side, the Centennial Women's Soccer team saw their season come to a close in the quarterfinals. Despite starting behind, the Colts fought their way back into the match but couldn't hold off the Humber Hawks, who equalized to force the game into overtime. With no goals in extra time, the match went to penalties, where the Hawks edged out the Colts 6-5.
Although the loss was heartbreaking, it doesn't overshadow the incredible season the Colts had under the leadership of Coach Rich Hirst. The team remained undefeated until the playoffs, scoring an impressive 45 goals in 10 games and boasting the best defensive record in program history. This was a season to remember and a significant milestone for the Women's Soccer program.
The team's progress was evident throughout the year, as the Colts, a balanced mix of rookies and veterans, played with a chemistry that suggested they had been together for years. The result? Six players earned All-Star selections. Fourth-year captain Emily Cullen, first-year midfielder Sydney Fraser, and second-year forward Vanessa Lima were named to the East Division First-Team All-Star, with Lima also earning All-Canadian honours. The East Division Second-Team All-Star selections included third-year winger Mylie Decoff, second-year midfielder Elizabeth Maione, and third-year goalkeeper Jordyn Chorns-Slaght. Additionally, Sydney Fraser's exceptional debut season earned her a spot on the East Division All-Rookie Team - an accolade that surprised no one given her standout performances.
This season, however, was about more than just statistics. The team's passion and love for the game were evident every time they stepped onto the field. Their energy and determination to fight for every ball, right up until the final whistle, were truly inspiring. While the season may not have ended as they hoped, the impact this team had on the program is undeniable.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the fans who supported the Colts from the stands. Your presence made every moment more meaningful and exciting.
To the players and coaching staff: Congratulations on a remarkable season. Thank you for treating this sport with such respect and for giving us so many reasons to be proud. Best of luck as you prepare for the indoor season - we can't wait to see what comes next!
